Upcoming Yes We Can Inwood Service Opportunities

Dear Yes We Can Inwood Families and Friends,

Thank you to everyone who participated in our clean up in Isham Park last month. We filled many bags of trash and the event was cited in the New York Times City Room section thanks to local Inwood blogger Carla Zanoni.

Here are our next 3 service days planned through June 5. We hope to see you at one or all of these events:

Saturday, May 1, 10 AM-1PM, Beak Street entrance to Inwood Hill Park
Please join the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and Friends of Payson Avenue to plant a new greeting garden at the entrance to Inwood Hill Park at Beak Street and Payson Avenue . The Parks Department and local neighbors will be planting, mulching, and installing protective fencing for the new greeting garden. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Payson Avenue.

Saturday, May 15m 11AM-1PM, Isham Park
We will be joining "Volunteers for Isham Park" as part of the citywide It's My Park Day. We will be mulching and cleaning up the southwest hill ramp near Isham and Park Terrace West as well as other locations throughout the park. Let's meet just inside the park next to the traffic circle on Park Terrace East.

Saturday, June 5, 10 AM-3PM, Hike the Heights from RING Garden to Highbridge Park
This activity is more about community and (re)discovering our neighborhood. Yes We Can Inwood will once again participate in the 6th annual Hike the Heights event whose goal is to invigorate public spaces by bringing more visitors to northern Manhattan parks and to inspire young and old people to be more physically active.

On Saturday, June 5, we will gather at the RING Garden (Dyckman Street b/w Broadway & Seaman Avenue) at 10:00 a.m. The hike will start promptly at 10:30am when we will walk east on Dyckman towards 10th Avenue where we will enter Highbridge Park and then hike up through the park to the water tower. Hikers will be coming from 5 different starting points in northern Manhattan. All hikes will converge at the Highbridge Recreation Center on 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue. A huge community celebration at Highbridge Park will follow with food, games, activities and performances. To watch a clip of last year's event and learn more about the event, visit: www.thegiraffenyc.org . There are also some great photos of last year's event on our website.

The event is being organized by The CLIMB project (City Life Is Moving Bodies), part of the Center for Youth Violence Prevention at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Hope to see you in the park!

Warm Regards,
Margaret & Tricia
